All the celebrities who welcomed children via surrogates

In January 2024, Lily Collins and her husband, Charlie McDowell, announced the happy news that they'd welcomed a baby girl, Tove, via surrogate.

Through a joint social media post, the couple shared: "Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again…"

Charlie also followed up with a comment reminding people to be kind and not judge those who expand their family with the help of a surrogate, writing underneath the post, "Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful.In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby— it’s ok to not be an expert on surrogacy.:

He continued on to add, "It’s ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives. That’s all for now because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper."

In April 2023, Queer Eye presenter and fashion designer Tan France announced that he and his husband were expecting their second child via a surrogate.

Opening up about their surrogacy journey in a podcast interview, Tan said: "Becoming dads has been our greatest joy, and we are so excited to grow our family with the help of our wonderful surrogate."

Previously speaking about his road to parenthood, Tan told his followers during his first baby announcement: "So happy to finally share that WE’RE HAVING A BABY!!"

"No, I’m not pregnant, despite this VERY realistic pic. With the greatest gift/help of the most wonderful surrogate, Rob and I are lucky enough to be on our way to being parents, this summer," he wrote on Instagram. "Something we’ve wanted for soooo many years. Our hearts are so full right now. I cannot wait to hold this baby, and to show him so much love."

A month later, Isaac made his way into the world.

Taking to Instagram on 25 January 2023, Paris Hilton revealed she had become a mum for the first time. "You are already loved beyond words," she wrote in the caption of the post, which showed a tiny hand (belonging to her son Phoenix) holding onto her thumb. Awh!

People later confirmed that Paris and husband Carter Reum had welcomed the newborn via a surrogate, with the reality TV star and heiress telling the magazine: "It's always been my dream to be a mother and I'm so happy that Carter and I found each other."

She went on, "We are so excited to start our family together and our hearts are exploding with love for our baby boy."

Paris and Carter later had a daughter, London, via surrogate too.

Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson took to Instagram on 7 November 2022 to announce the birth of her first child, who she welcomed via a surrogate.

"Beyond proud to announce the birth of my first child, Royce Lillian, born this past week via surrogate," the actor told her fans. "I can’t even describe the love I have for her, she’s a beautiful miracle!"

Wilson went on: "I am forever grateful to everyone who has been involved, (you know who you are), this has been years in the making… but particularly wanted to thank my gorgeous surrogate who carried her and birthed her with such grace and care."

Musician Nick Jonas and actor Priyanka Chopra took to social media to share the exciting (and surprising) news that they had welcomed their first child by surrogate, a little girl named Malti.

In a joint statement shared on both of their Instagram accounts, the new parents said: "We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate."

The happy couple continued, "We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much."

In 2009, Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker and her film star husband, Matthew Broderick, welcomed twin daughters.

Speaking of the decision to use a surrogate, SJP told Access Hollywood: "Well, you know, we've been trying to expand our family for a number of years and we actually have explored a variety of ways of doing so. This was one of the things we discussed with seriousness that had real possibilities for us."

The couple also have a son, born 2002, whom SJP carried.

Bring It On star Gabrielle Union surprised fans in 2018 when she revealed that she and husband Dwyane Wade had welcomed a daughter via surrogate.

"We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate," she said in an Instagram post announcing the news.

The actor had previously opened up about how adenomyosis (a condition where the tissue that normally lines the womb starts to grow within the muscular wall of the womb) had affected her fertility. Speaking to Essence, she said: "Towards the end of my fertility journey I finally got some answers, because everyone said 'You’re a career woman, you’ve prioritised your career, you waited too long and now you’re just too old to have a kid – and that’s on you for wanting a career. The reality is I actually have adenomyosis."

TV presenter and producer Andy Cohen announced in 2018 that he was expecting his first child via surrogacy.

Speaking on an episode of Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, he said: "After many years of careful deliberation, a fair amount of prayers and the benefit of science, if all goes according to plan, in about six weeks time, I’m going to become a father thanks to a wonderful surrogate who is carrying my future."

He added, "Family means everything to me and having one of my own is something that I have wanted in my heart for my entire life."

After two difficult pregnancies carrying North and Saint, and developing placenta accreta (a serious pregnancy condition that occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall), Kim Kardashian and her now ex husband, Kanye West, opted for a surrogate for their third and fourth children, Chicago and Psalm.

Speaking on her website about her surrogate, Kim said: "We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give."

Kim took her fans along with her on her surrogacy journey as she openly talked about her experience while filming Keeping Up With The Kardashians. She also offered surrogacy advice to her younger sister, Khloe.

After welcoming their first child (who Nicole Kidman gave birth to) together in 2008, the Nine Perfect Strangers actor and her husband Keith Urban went down the surrogacy route for their second.

According to Us Weekly, Nicole described her experience as a "roller coaster ride with fertility," and when asked about her surrogate, she simply said: "She was the most wonderful woman to do this for us."

Actor Amber Heard took to Instagram earlier this year to share the exciting announcement that she'd become a mother. "I'm so excited to share this news with you," she told her 4 million Instagram followers.

"Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms. I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way," the 35-year-old added, "I hope we arrive at a point in which it's normalised to not want a ring in order to have a crib."

How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris welcomed not one but two kids via a surrogate, when he became a father to twins in 2010.

Speaking about their experience with surrogacy as a gay couple, Harris' husband, David Burtka said: "It's a lot harder for gay guys [to have kids], although we tried!" [Via Wendy Williams Show].

"[There were] two different women involved. There was an egg donor, a wonderful woman who was anonymous. We took two of our best guys and implanted them into her eggs, two different eggs," he added.

In 2016, supermodel and TV presenter Tyra Banks announced she'd welcomed her first child via a surrogate. Since then, she's been open about her struggles with fertility and journey to motherhood.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said: "I don't remember if it was, 'Am I less than a woman?' but I remember just thinking, 'Oh my god, I waited too long, like, why did I do this?"

Tyra continued, "I think I'm lucky, you know, I did about a year and a half of IVF and some women do it for years and years and years."

On the topic of whether she'd have more children, she said, "I think that was the end. I think I probably could've kept going, but I just think it wasn't healthy for my body because less eggs and less eggs and less eggs, you know, every month. But I'm so happy."
